Registro Nacional de Costa Rica

The Registro Nacional is the agency attached to the Ministerio de Justicia y Paz responsible for the country's registration and geospatial activities: it is the entity where property, businesses, and intellectual property are legally recorded, giving them public notice and validity against third parties.

Main registers it administers:

• Registro Inmobiliario (Registro Publico de la Propiedad): registers real estate (farms, houses, land) and every transfer, mortgage, lien or encumbrance on them (see property transfer record).
• Registro de Bienes Muebles: includes vehicles and other movable assets that can be registered, and the movable guarantees established on them (see vehicle transfer records and movable guarantee records).
• Registro de Personas Juridicas (Registro Mercantil): registers corporations (SRL, S.A.) and other legal entities, and issues legal personalities (see company registration records and legal personality records).
• Registro de la Propiedad Industrial: trademarks, trade names, patents and other intellectual property rights (see trademark registration record).
• Catastro Nacional: maintains the cadastral maps of the country's real estate, a technical base that must match what is recorded in the Registro Inmobiliario (see cadastral map record).

Online services: the RNPDigital platform (rnpdigital.com) allows to check who is the registered owner of an asset, to review if it has liens, purchase digital certifications, and for notaries to submit documents for registration — all without needing to go to a physical office physically.
