How to Find Your Assigned EBAIS and Your CCSS Coverage

In Costa Rica, primary health care of the CCSS is organized by Equipos Básicos de Atención Integral en Salud (EBAIS). Each dwelling belongs to a specific geographic sector and, therefore, to a specific EBAIS — a team usually serves between 4,000 and 5,000 people according to its assigned zone.

How to know which EBAIS is yours and if your insurance is active:

1. Go to the CCSS SICERE portal at www.ccss.sa.cr. 2. Look for the option “Consulta Estado del Asegurado.” 3. Enter your cédula number. 4. The system shows whether the insurance is active, under which modality (salaried, independent, volunteer or state) and which EBAIS is assigned according to your address.

Insurance modalities:

• Salaried: the employer registers the worker (see CCSS employer registration form).
• Independent: the person registers on their own based on their income.
• Volunteer: for those who do not fit the previous categories but want to contribute.
• State: coverage for people in poverty, financed by the State.

Actualization 2026: the CCSS announced the incorporation of 297 new positions in EBAIS across 15 health areas of the country, as part of a strategy to optimize primary care. This may mean changes in the capacity of your EBAIS depending on the zone.

Note: if you move residence, your assigned EBAIS changes according to the new address — it is good practice to check SICERE again after a move.
